How do you see a door? Is it merely a necessary object, a functional design element or perhaps even a work of art? When you see the Evolution Door, an innovative door design by Austrian artist Klemens Torggler, you may feel automatically drawn to it. Very different from the doors we know, it is one of those design pieces whose existence you may never have imagined, but which is hard to forget once seen.
Door Design Based on Revolutionary Rotating Squares
The Austrian designer developed an extraordinary and functional new style of door based on rotating squares and movement without tracks. It offers an alternative to conventional doors and to expensive automatic sliding systems, because it can be moved with a light touch by hand. The structure is composed of four triangular segments, and the folding panels recall origami. This elegant piece opens and closes with a striking kinetic movement. The innovative system is quiet, simple and visually compelling.
The Kinetic Door Moves With a Light Touch
Klemens Torggler, based in Vienna, has produced versions of the Evolution Door in glass, wood and steel. The design measures approximately 212 x 108 cm. These pieces were still prototypes when presented, but the hope was that they might eventually reach the market. Watch the movement below: it is hard to look away.
