“Green Screen” is a single-storey dwelling by Japanese architect Hideo Kumaki and is located in Saitama, Japan. The highlight of the house is a large green screen, an ivy-covered wall supported by the curved facade. Natural light is filtered through the leaves and creates beautiful light-and-shadow effects. The green wall also provides pleasant shade in the hot summer months. Nature played a major role in the design and landscaping, as this house features beautiful rose and vegetable gardens.

The courtyard was built around two cherry trees and also helps connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. The plant wall was positioned in the best location for plant growth and for cross-ventilation through the interior after a detailed study of the air currents on the site. The green wall is regarded as a feature of environmentally friendly design and helps reduce the house’s energy demand. It cools the interior naturally without the need for air conditioning.

The green screen wall provides extra room for the house and offers a space for outdoor relaxation for the whole family. Straight lines are avoided so there is no hard border between the spaces. The curved shape of the house increases interaction between residents, as the different rooms and areas merge harmoniously.
